Shabana and

the Baby Goat (Tulika Books)

As part of a five-month internship at Tulika Books, a children's book publishing house in Chennai, I illustrated and designed a picture book for early readers titled 'Shabana and the Baby Goat', written by Samina Mishra.

Samina's charming story of friendship between a little girl and her pet goat was a fun blank canvas for me to illustrate, and I greatly enjoyed every step of the process.

The project took me through every stage of picture book creation - under the guidance of the experienced and supportive team at Tulika - from early rough sketches, style exploration, pagination experimentation, and overall typography and book design.

As my first published picture book project, Shabana and Kajri will always hold a special place in my heart.

REFERENCE IMAGES: The editorial team decided that showing the characters in traditional ethnic attire would help ground the story in a specific setting. As a result, I looked at pictures of baby goats in a rural setting, as well as families and children in everyday Islamic attire.

ROUGH IDEAS & STORYBOARDS

FINAL STORYBOARDS: Following feedback on the flow of the story and improved pagination, I redid the storyboards to finalize how the illustrations would help complement the text better. Below is a sample:
